Three Easy Ways to Shop Smarter
Growing up I was always fashionable but never stylish. I had clothes but not a lasting wardrobe. So unless I’d just gone shopping I never had anything to wear. I grew tired of my new clothes very quickly. I waisted a hell of a whole lotta money and still couldn’t conquer style, because I was shopping harder but not smarter.
News Flash: You can’t just go shopping and buy whatever catches your eye, because that’s how you end up with a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.
Maybe you're gravitating towards the trends that you see on everyone else. But maybe these don't work for you. Maybe you're shopping pieces that are way out of comfort zone. Whatever you're doing, these three tips will help you shop smarter so you don’t end up with a purposeless wardrobe.
Shop in Outfits:
Shopping in outfits will make your life SO much easier. This doesn’t mean that you purchase an entire outfit when you shop. But if you’re picking out a top, think about how it will fit into your existing wardrobe. Make sure that you can build at least 3 different outfits out of it. This is going to guarantee that you’re buying something you will actually wear and not grow tired of. Its the perfect way to check if a piece fits your personal style and existing wardrobe.
Be mindful of sales:
I love sales, don’t get me wrong, but they can be very misleading. Just because you find xyz for 10 bucks, doesn’t mean you need to buy it. Why? Because half of that ish ends up stuck in the back of your closet. When you’re shopping sales ask yourself if you’re just adding stuff to your closet vs. adding value. Make sure that its something you really need and that you would buy even if it wasn’t on sale. Don’t compromise on what you wan’t just because you’re paying less.
Have a Cost Per Wear Mentality:
For basic pieces like coats, sweaters, and the jeans you'll likely live in, it's best to spend a little more for better quality items. For example I love forever 21, but would never go there to buy my everyday coat. It'll pill and feel old after just a few wears. Essentially, you'll end spending more replacing bad quality coats. However, for trendier items it's best to spend less. Don't splurge on costume jewelry, trendy blouses or statement handbags.
