The Easy Way to Clean Out Your Closet for Spring

It’s about that time again. Spring is right around the corner and we need to start cleaning out our closets. I know it sounds so daunting & incredibly overwhelming. You probably have tons of clothes you need to go through and don’t even know where to start. But you need to get it done because when your closet is full of clothes that serve no purpose it hinders your ability to get dressed in the morning.

Luckily, I created a quick and easy two step method to cleaning out your closet.  But before I even start talking about that, there are some things that you need to do in order for this to really work. This is a quick and easy method so that you don’t feel overwhelmed, but the only way that it’s going to work is if you don’t overthink it.  You need to be willing to let go of the clothes that  you know don’t work. Remember that these are just materialistic things. So don’t feel super attached to them. If something is sitting in the back of your closet and you haven’t worn it in years, let it go. You’ve clearly ignored it, so you really don’t need it.  Just remember that when it comes to  style, less really is more. Less clothes means you have more clarity when it comes to getting dressed in the morning, and your personal style is more well defined. Once you’ve accepted  these two concepts, then you’re ready for the two step method.

The two step method is to simply switch & sort.

The Switch

For now, only focus on your spring pieces & summer pieces, because IT'S less overwhelming to go through less clothes. Start off by switching out your fall and winter pieces for your spring and summer pieces and your year-round basics.

What exactly are your year-round basics?  It’s depends  on your personal style, but they’re mostly similar for everyone. These are the pieces that are versatile and go with just about anything, but you can wear them all year round. For me they are pieces like my white & black short sleeve T-shirts, my jeans,  and my neutral blazers.

Once you’re done, you want to really make sure that the pieces in your closet, are the pieces that you can wear right now. So there shouldn’t be a winter coat in there or a chunky sweater, because that’s just taking up unnecessary space in your closet and in your mind when you’re getting dressed in the morning.  Because think about it: imagine you’re in a rush to get dressed in the morning and you’re going through your closet  and half of those pieces are pieces that you can’t even wear. How much longer will it take you to get dressed in the morning?  It’s gonna take you a hell of a lot longer, so that’s why it’s so important that your closet is truly curated with only the pieces you love and the pieces you can wear right now.

The Sort

This is where it gets a little tricky, but only if you overthink it. Before you start on the sort, make sure to download my free worksheet to take notes.

For the sort, you’re going to start off with two piles: Clothes that you always wear & clothes that you never wear.  Then you’re going to break those down even more and finish with seven different piles.

(Note: For this excercise Its best to ignore the comfy clothes, that you wear for quick errands or to lounge around at home in. Only consider the clothes you wear for work or any other social events.)

Starting with: 1. Pieces you wear all the time.

From those, create another pile for:

2. Pieces that look really old or damaged. These are generally clothes that are pilling  (they are forming little balls that pop up), stained, or they just plain raggedy.

 3. Pieces that you wear a lot,  but you know they don’t really work for you.  This can be that big comfy sweater that looks ill fitting but you love it. Or maybe it’s a graphic tee that you know isn’t really appropriate for your age.

Then create pile 4. For Clothes that you barely ever wear.

From those, create another pile for:

5. Pieces you want to wear but you don’t know what to wear it with.

6.  Clothes you want to wear but they don’t fit.

And finally,  7. Occasion Wear. Things like dresses and gowns that you only wear for special events.

Now here’s what you do with these piles.

Remember, all you have to do is switch & sort, so don’t overthink it. Just go through the steps And really listen to your gut.
