How To Shop: Sweaters

I live in sweaters all winter long. I don't want sweaters that pill or lose their shape but the truth most do. Still, I made it my mission to find the ones that don't. See there's a lot more to shopping for sweaters than you think. It's not as simple as going for cotton, wool or cashmere. This is why I've compiled 3 tips to help you shop for sweaters that barely pill & won't shrink. I've also linked some of my favorites down below.

Let's Talk about Quality:

I shouldn't have to say this but I will anyway. I could spot a cheap sweater from a mile away. After one or two wears, poor quality sweaters are already doing the things you hate; they're pilling and losing their shape. So go for quality. There are negotiations on this one.

Develop a Cost per Wear Mindset:

This goes hand in hand with great quality.  Sweaters are the one place in your wardrobe where you need to invest. Popular sweater styles like the cable knit or cardigan never go out of style. Ideally, you'd like to keep them for years to come so if you have to spend a little bit more money it will be worth it.

Don't Stop at Natural Fibers:

The rule of thumb for shopping good quality sweaters is opting for natural fibers. That's a great starting point, but don't stop there. Sweaters made of fabrics like cotton, cashmere, or wool are great, but they still require a lot of care. This is what most people don't know: When shopping for sweaters It's best to look for those natural fibers first, but also make sure there's a synthetic element. For example,  If I'm shopping for a cotton or cashmere sweater, I want nylon in it. The nylon will prevent the sweater from losing its shape.I won't ever go for 100% wool because the pilling and itchiness will be intolerable. The secret is for at least 60-70% of the sweater to be natural fibers (Cotton, wool, cashmere) and the other portion of synthetic (nylon, acrylic).
